Inlays and onlays which are sometimes referred to as crowns make use of the existing structure of the tooth as a base to strengthen and restore its shape while also preventing damage. Inlays are used when the cusps of the tooth are intact allowing them to be directly placed onto the tooth. Onlays on the hand are chosen for more extensive damage. The decayed part of the tooth is.
